Welcome to Year 5H

In year 5H our class teacher is Miss Hall, and we are supported by Mrs Meads.

As responsible, respectful, and resilient learners the children will not only grow in knowledge but also develop important skills that will help them thrive both in and out of the classroom.

A huge part of our learning is focused on reading. We read a wide range of texts during our whole class reading sessions, developing our retrieval, inference, and prediction skills. We also look closely at vocabulary, thinking about word meaning, why authors choose the language they do and the impact this has on the reader. Once we have explored texts in detail, we then use our knowledge to summarise the text in a range of ways such as ordering events and identifying key themes. This year we will be continuing with our Talk4Writing building on our fiction and non-fiction writing. We explore model texts in depth to identify features of text structures so can innovate them into our individual versions. We also have a huge focus on Maths. We use the children's knowledge from lower key stage two to work with larger numbers, decimals, and negative numbers. It is important that we continue to practise our multiplication facts to ensure we can apply them when multiplying larger numbers. Children have logins for TTRockstars so they can practise in school and at home.

On Monday mornings, Year 5H attend swimming sessions at Everyone Active in Scarborough. Please make sure your child has their swimming kit with them on a Monday. Our PE slot is on a Thursday in school. All children need their PE Kit in school and earrings removed on this day.

In 5H the children love to earn Dojos. At the end of the week have 2 DoJo winners which go the children who have earnt the most Dojos. Dojos are awarded to children who display and follow our 8 golden rules. We also like to use Class Dojo to keep parents informed about any valuable information and to share the exciting things we get up to in 5H so please keep a look out for important messages and photographs of all the exciting things that we have been up to. Families are also encouraged to post pictures into the children’s portfolios so that we can share and celebrate events and learning that happens at home.

Our aim is to make this year not only educational but fun and memorable for the children!

We use Class Dojo to keep our families up to date with what is happening in the classroom and any upcoming events. Children and their families are encouraged to post photos on their children’s portfolio page to keep us up to date with any achievements outside of school.
